Editorial - PC Week
Compaq looking good

November 16, 1998 9:00 AM ET

Although our stock in trade is the news of
the week, some stories deserve the
perspective that comes from a few months
of aging. With its mid-October earnings
announcement, Compaq invites a look at the
progress of its midyear acquisition of Digital
Equipment Corp.

At the time of the buyout, we noted that Digital's presence in IT services
would boost Compaq's position in this area, which is of critical
importance to enterprise customers. Compaq has followed through: The
acquired services business has shown its strongest annual growth in five
years.

Other positive outcomes rode on the ill winds that blew through
Redmond and Silicon Valley. Delays in the next generation of NT and in
Intel's IA-64, or Merced, have strengthened corporate IT managers'
appreciation of Compaq's 64-bit platform of Unix on Alpha. Compaq is
also saying nice things about Linux.

It's smart to be lucky, and it's lucky to be smart. Compaq has shown
both attributes since it took charge of Digital. The result is faster
progress than we anticipated in building a formidable company that can
cater to the full range of corporate information system needs.
