'[roleigh_for_web] Information on Voltage Meters / Line Voltage Monitor By Roleigh Martin @tc.umn.edu Monday November 16, 1998 10:36 PM PST
Part of contingency planning for Y2K is to deal with the issue of dirty power versus power outages. Some information sent to me from someone at Lucent's division dealing with UPSs. I met this individual when I spoke in Boulder, Colorado on Y2K.
By the way, I found a $21 Line Voltage Monitor, Number 280110, from Tempo Products Company, PO Box 39126, Cleveland, OH 44139. Phone: 440-248-1450. It plugs into any 120 volt receptacle and can remain plugged in. It provides a "accurate, continuous voltage reading, [an] easy to read expanded scale, [and a] green zone indicates proper voltage range."
A friend got this for me (I paid him back) at a RV/Camper supply store.

    Hi Roleigh,
    Information on voltage meters:
There are two brands that are recommended - Drantz and Fluke. Drantz has a strip chart recorder so you can see in a tape what the voltage is doing.
Fluke has a voltage event recorder that you download into a PC. You set the parameters and it will record the details of the voltage whenever it goes outside of the parameters. I understand it only measures single phase loads so if you want to look at 120 VAC house current, this would work fine. We have gotten these devices from R&R Instrumentation. R&R both rents and sells them. A Denver number for them is 303 364-8325. The guys I spoke with in Bell Labs believe the company has branches all over, so the Denver number would be a good place to start.
Regarding standalone voltage regulators, the labs told me that they are fraught with problems and it is better to get one in a UPS.
