cgraham, I know I will make pumpkin pie, and probably one apple. I prefer pecan, but the kids won't eat it. I have a nice piecrust recipe that I can make in the food processor, so it is really easy. Of course, I could never make all the things by myself, my husband and I have been doing this for so long, we almost don't have to talk, just communicate in sign language and grunts. The only conversation we have is our running battle that he thinks I am doing too much, in his opinion. We just got back from the grocery store, I wanted to get a turkey, and make turkey and dressing as well as roast beef and mashed potatoes. He prevailed on me to cook the turkey for Wednesday night supper, sort of a pre-Thanksgiving, with his brother, and withdrew his objection. His family's traditional pre-holiday meal is cold cuts, and rye bread, they are German heritage, and I hate cold cuts.
When I was growing up, my father never helped, and my mother always acted like a martyr. It's nice to have help.
I have never made fresh croissants, do you make those? Yeast rolls are simple, and fun, if you start early enough so they can rise a couple of times. We have a shelf over the stove and it gets pretty warm up there, so after I make the dough I just put it in an oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap and stash it over the stove and forget about it for a while. I like to use unbleached white flour, I have some King Arthur that I got at Whole Foods, and maybe I will put some cracked millet or crushed sesame seeds in it, if no one objects.
I take my feasts very seriously, the food part, but I am not much on decorating and making the house festive.
