A friend and I decided to slaughter a hog one year.

Your use of the phrase one year, indicates that this didn't become a yearly tradition.

As a 13 year old I went hunting a number of times with my Dad on our property. I shot at a number of things I remember, like quail and rabbits. Usually without much success. One day I spotted a rabbit and drilled it straight away. My first. My Dad carried it back to the house and gave me a lesson in skinning. It was a she rabbit with two babies near term. He said that he would skin that one, but that thereafter it would be my responsibility since I would know how. (It was the rule of the house when it came to hunting and fishing.)

We had rabbit stew several days later.

I stuck to fishing after that. Cleaning a string of bass somehow became a lot more appealing.
