There is one negative to not using the proxy server.

In most cases, the proxy "hides" your IP from the rest of the world.
Your request goes to the proxy, the proxy requests the info from the site you are after and forwards it to you.

Turning off the proxy, while expedient, is not free. Risk is increased.

Pressure @home to improve the response through the proxy, I am. It shouldn't degrade that badly and I prefer another level of abstraction to those watching. <gg>
