Advanced Fibre Communications and France Telecom
Extend Supply Contract

PETALUMA, Calif., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Fibre Communications®, Inc. (AFC) (Nasdaq: AFCI - news)
announced today that France Telecom [NYSE:FTE - news], the fourth largest telecommunications service provider in the
world, has renewed its supply contract for AFC's UMC 1000® Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC), extending
current supply commitments through December of 1999.

AFC's UMC 1000 has been deployed throughout France Telecom's networks since September, 1996 to deliver POTS
services over E1-HDSL. The renewed contract substantiates AFC's presence within France Telecom as a primary multiplexer
vendor.

''We look forward to expanding our product and service offerings to France Telecom as we continue to provide industry
leading solutions that address the needs of their growing customer base,'' says Gregory A. Peters, vice president of International
Operations at AFC.

The UMC 1000 fits France Telecom's strategic plans and allows them to fully utilize their current network without the expense
of adding expensive copper cable. In an increasingly competitive market, it has become critical for France Telecom to maximize
its network by deploying equipment that seamlessly transitions to meet emerging service requirements: AFC's UMC 1000 offers
the ideal solution.

The scaleable design of AFC's UMC 1000 allows telephone service providers to cost-effectively upgrade current networks to
offer multiple service options over copper, fiber or wireless transport media.

AFC is a leading manufacturer of telecommunications systems for the ''local loop'' between telephone service users and public
telephone networks worldwide. AFC has pioneered a single platform that supports any network, any transport, and any
service. AFC's flagship product, the UMC 1000® 3rd Generation Digital Loop Carrierâ„¢, provides any service from POTS to
xDSL over copper, fiber, HDSL, and radio transport media. Additional information on AFC can be found on the web at
