I read the Business Week article -- it is the best all-around piece I've seen on George Rathmann's career and what makes him keep going to work at the age of 70 (he loves business AND science).

The only themes that the article didn't fully develop, but which may be discussed in future journalistic forays on ICOS, are: (1) the rather broad range (a dozen or so, I think) of drugs under development at ICOS, and (2) the serious intellectual interest that Bill Gates has in the whole biotech revolution, perhaps not only because of the increasing use of computers in "bioinformatics" but also his passion for wanting to help invent the future.

On the first point, Rathmann was known at Amgen for employing a "targeted diversification" strategy -- which he also seems to be following at ICOS: Raise money for multiple technology developments, and take advantage of serendipitous developments that follow.
