The K7 reportedly had a back side L2 bus speed of only 1/3 the CPU speed. Not good - perfromance will suffer badly

Not necessarily, because:

1. K7 has a large L1.
2. Bandwidth from the L2 is almost meaningless in single processor systems.
3. The L2 bus is undoubtably pipelined.
