Very interesting article Gus. It sure looks like there's not much cost savings to get out with out either cutting heads and media, or perhaps reducing quality with fewer testing steps.

The suggestion by Fujitsu that there would be a single integrated control chip introduced in 99 is interesting. I spoke with a few people on this subject and they suggested the technology is not that hard, but the whole system logic would have to be re-written and that was a daunting task. Once it is proven, it would seem llike it would sweep the whole product line of a company very quickly, and coould be a very competitive pricing tool.

They also talk about using single sided platters. This seems like such a waste of good space to save a couple bucks. The idea that you could sell a drive with a half sided platter seems totally ridiculous.
