I just don't buy the notion that the specialists are adept at shorting. The notion (I think) is that specialist short positions above 30% are bearish for the market. But, this chart (admittedly not so easy to read) doesn't appear to indicate that large specialist short positions can predict downturns. In fact, the last spike up in specialist shorts a few weeks ago seems to have resulted in a short squeeze. marketgauge.com
