California Teens Lobby Parents for an Increase in the 'Minimum Allowance'

CALIFORNIA - With the passage of California's Prop. 10, taxes on cigarettes have increased by 50¢ a pack. California teens, worried that the new tax might affect their ability to purchase cigarettes have begun lobbying their parents for an increase in the 'minimum allowance.' Said one teen, "I don't need much of an increase, I only smoke a pack a day. When I asked my parents for an extra $2.50 a week my Dad said 'why don't we go ahead and make it an extra $3.00 a week'."

Said another teen, "It didn't take much begging to get my parents to agree to pay me more every week. I told them I need the money to help pay for some food and snacks while I'm at mid-night basketball. They are so clueless."

Another teen told BNN, "I'm not going to ask my parents for anything. If I need money for smokes then I just take it out of my mom's wallet. If she can't afford it then she can beg her boss for more money."
