Christine,
I'm glad you don't mind me posting now and then. We also have an only child (daughter). She's 7 now. She get's a lot of attention and demands more when she is left to herself. She will settle down and play by herself, but that is a small part of the time each day. I might be leaning towards the nurture side as a reaction to my own upbringing having feelings as I do that I was cheated on that score. I had 2 brothers and 3 sisters. There wasn't enough to go around and my parents were of the popular at the time persuasion that attention was detrimental to a child's self esteem. I guess some moron with a PHD wrote a book about it during my childhood and swayed the thinking of a generation of parents. That was a less enlightened time.

I dread in a way the time she becomes a teenager. With a son you only have to watch one boy. With a daughter you have to watch all the boys. I suppose if we had 6 kids we would not have everything invested in one. Whatever the one child does is going to be 100% of our reward/punishment. Sort of like being tied to the front of a freight train with no idea if it will crash or not. This age now is a great time. She is stubborn (my wife thinks I am too easy on her) but not unmanageable and is enjoying learning and doing new things. She does great in school and has a talent for drawing. She is in swimming now. I want to get started with her in tennis. She needs to take dance and learn to play the piano (for starters). How to cram that all into one kid! <gg>
