Cree is the only American company selling
large volumes of their own blue LEDs today.
HP is quickly coming up next, but a bulk if
not all their sales are chips they buy from
Japan, package, and re-sell.

However, current Cree chips are far inferior
to the Japanese stuff (shorter wavelength -
- 430 nm vs 450-470 nm most people want so
Cree's LEDs look more violet,,, lower brightness
too). They keep claiming they have improved to
the level of Nichia, and have green chips as
well, but the market haven't quite seen that
yet...

One of the major issues everyone has with the
blue LEDs is chip uniformity across a wafer.
So, it's relatively easy to make a few hero
chips to report at a conference and not quite
that easy to make them in volume.
