ITU Recognizes ADSL Forum as Liaison; Determination of one Standard expected to spur consumer demand in the mass market
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 23, 1998-- This week, in the midst of some of the biggest announcements of DSL deployments and product launches from industry giants such as MCI Worldcom, SBC Communications and Compaq, the ADSL Forum's Los Angeles Summit meeting presented the ''ADSL lifestyle'' with applications limited only by the imagination.

''At the Summit the international audience saw just a glimpse of what high-speed access will mean to our lifestyles,'' said Hans-Erhard Reiter, President of the ADSL Forum. ''DSL is here and here to stay. This week we've seen some of the key players in the industry step up to deliver the products and services that consumers are demanding.''

The ADSL Forum hosted a Summit meeting on Tuesday, November 17 at the Beverly Hills Hilton. The event proved to be an exciting ''meeting of the minds'' with powerful presentations from Forum members such as Microsoft, Dell, Compaq, Ameritech, and Cisco. Keynote speaker, Glen Estes from SBC Technology, applauded the ADSL Forum for its hard work in addressing technical matters over the past year. In particular he identified the importance of the Forum's work on end-to-end architecture that is fundamental to mass market delivery.

A highlight of the Summit was the demonstration and testimonials on how ADSL is already impacting consumer lifestyles. Attendees experienced high-speed access through live demons of video conferencing, music, games, online shopping, voice over IP, and more.

The Summit provided the telco's, equipment manufacturers and service providers the opportunity to experience for themselves, how DSL can enhance their businesses and value-added services.

''What we delivered at the Summit was a demonstration of today's opportunity to compete in the future of the communications industry,'' said Reiter. ''The determination of one standard by the ITU allows competitors to effectively reach the mass market.''

The ADSL Forum is pleased to announce that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) formally recognized the organization as a liaison regarding industry and technical matters pertaining to DSL.

The next ADSL Forum Summit Meeting will take place in Washington, DC on 2 March 1999. For additional information please visit www.adsl.com.
