Melco Gets License for Rambus High-Speed Memory Technology
November 24, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Melco Inc., a maker of extended memory modules, said it signed a licensing agreement with Rambus Inc. of the United States to allow it to utilize the Direct Rambus high-speed memory technology.
Direct Rambus enables data to be transferred at speeds of up to 1.6GB per second.

The Direct Rambus technology will be employed in a new Intel Corp. chip set scheduled to be commercially available in 1999. Main memory modules for use in PCs that feature the new chip set will need to conform to Direct Rambus standards.

Melco thus signed a licensing contract with Rambus to ensure that it can obtain the technical information it needs for developing new memory modules.

According to Melco, the first PCs equipped with the new Intel chip set will likely start appearing on store shelves in the spring. The company expects that its new memory modules with Direct Rambus technology also will become available in the spring or summer of 1999.
