The murder of Starovoitova may very well have been a political murder, Vi. At any rate, the Russian papers are full of speculation on that point. And many commentators see her murder as marking a major -- and very ominous -- turning-point in the country's political life, particularly since it immediately follows the Duma's failure to condemn Makashov's anti-Semitic outbursts...Makashov and Duma speaker Gennady Seleznyov have both been accused of being behind the murder. That no doubt is unfair, but the mere fact that they are being accused should tell us something...

On the other hand, Russians do tend to be alarmist. But again, that may be because over the years they have had so many good reasons to be alarmist.
