Jim, things aren't the same as they use to be. The Phone Company, known as a TELCO or a RBOC if it is a Regional Bell Operating Company, are now required to allow some of their competitors access to their CO (central office) etc., this is by ruling of the FCC. It allows for an ISP for example to place their own required DSL hardware into the CO...thus enabling the ISP to provide you with ADSL service.

That's a simplified description of the current status of things.

As for old copper. We all know how a penny will tarnish...well it does the same thing in a phone line when the elements come into contact with it. The result is a degraded connection among other things, that causes noise in the line. The noise just plain screws up the data flowing along the line. So we now know distance and noise are enemies of ADSL as it is with any other communications traveling along the lines. There are things such as repeaters which can be placed along the line, but I don't know much about them and how they work with xDSL. Another thing is to increase the power of the signal when it's introduced into the copper. With splitterless ADSL this causes problems, one of them is it creates noise. Also the power is limited by FCC rule.

I must admit my knowledge is limited...hope I helped however.
