Sudan To Be Self-Sufficient In Oil By 1999 - Report
November 24, 1998

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP)-- Sudan's energy and mining minister was quoted
Tuesday as saying that the country will be self-sufficient in oil next year, saving some $450 million a year in import bills.

The minister, Awad Jazz, told the official daily al-Anbaa that Sudan is investing $3.5 billion in the oil industry and 47 international oil companies are now engaged in oil and mining projects inside the country.

Jazz said Sudan has already signed 12 agreements with international companies for mineral and gold prospects. He said Sudan currently exports five tons of gold in a Sudanese-French venture.
