Chip: I refer to this as "curbside analysis", and I've profited by visiting the discounters here in Santa Rosa area, e.g WMT, and BBY.
You can talk to the employees and get a sense of traffic/sales and
sales of high profit margin items, e.g., software, CD's, video games at BBY . By the way BBY is doing very well this year, as thier stock price would reflect. Don't know that the strong Xmas season isn't already refected in stock price for WMT/BBY et al.; but it appears the big cap rally will continue for a few more weeks and may be stronger than some expect, before any significant retracement. We have a grace period now, with feel good Xmas business activity, before profit warnings start for some international companies, mid Dec.
