Picking up on Telecom mergers
Rumors. Sometimes I think it's safe to ignore them. Tellabs (TLAB) is down about $5 a share since it peaked just below $60 on Nov. 11. The weakness seems to be caused by rumors that shipments to NYNEX are running behind schedule and general worry about an anticipated increase in accounts receivable. Here's what I know about these two issues. First, NYNEX is indeed deploying the company's Titan product, and Tellabs has said that it's still on target to meet its goal of $230 million in Titan sales for the quarter. Second, Tellabs has reported that accounts receivable always rise in the fourth quarter, but that they should actually rise less than in 1997. The increase, apparently, isn't an indication that the company is loading the back-end of the quarter with last minute sales in order to make its numbers.
