Rational thought and compassion can be completely separated. Ask any perfectly rational sociopath. (I would also extend the argument the other way - there are the irrationally compassionate among us - )

What is often lacking on some of these threads (I have seen this in stark relief over at Sanity, where opposition equals moral turpitude) is the simple realization that one need not agree - or even understand - in order to allow another's opinion.

The human temptation is to align those of distasteful opinion in a category of Enemy, of Wrong Thinkers (and thus by perfectly constructed logic - people who have forfeited equitable treatment). Imho the measure of a person's adulthood is how good [s]he is at spotting and disabling this baboon-instinct.
