There are many post #'s that don't exist and they couldn't have been poofed at the stroke of midnight and turned into pumpkins. I suspect that the # is assigned as soon as Respond is selected but every response is not submitted and therefore the # is lost in cyberspace.
Or (here's the conspiracy theory) the counter is incrementing incorrectly to pad the number of posts for, dare I say, revenue purposes.

Lets see if I'm still here tomorrow. :o)
