Low prices and the desire to be connected to the Internet drove almost 4 million new buyers to purchase their first PCs in the initial six months of 1998, according to data released on Tuesday by market survey firm ZD Market Intelligence.
In total, 50 million homes -- just shy of half of all U.S. households -- now have at least one PC, said the study.
Analysis: How high can we go?
The number of new users jumping onto the PC bandwagon will far outstrip those in 1997, said Dave Trembly, industry analyst for ZDMI. Trembley pointed out that the 4 million new users buying PCs the first six months of 1998 come close to matching the 4.9 million first-time PC buyers from all of 1997.
"We haven't even come to the big Christmas selling season yet," he wrote in an InfoBead analyzing the data.
Trempley pointed to curiosity about the Internet coupled with ever-lower PC prices as the main reasons behind consumers' decision to buy.
With declining prices, lower-income families are able to own PCs. Households with incomes of less than $30,000 -- while only making up a quarter of all homes owning a PC -- accounted for a third of all new PC purchases.
