Craig,

The camera manufacturers view digital cameras more as computer peripherals than photographic equipment (note the lack of affordable SLR digital cameras currently). That is why the concept of "a PC in every home" and the growing reliance on internet correspondence will continue to sell digital cameras at a furious pace.

There may be some who require something like a set-top box/cable modem for viewing and editing, but that seems to be a very small segment of current users. I suspect that I am not alone in using my PC both as a repository for my digital photos and a high tech editing lab. I also back them up on a ZIP disc in case my hard drive gets trashed. (You know how rotating media can be.) It would be nice to be able to make a permanent "negative" of the images on a CD.

Regarding printing of images, I think the beauty of digital photography will be its viability as an adjunct to, rather than a replacement of emulsion film, the ready accessability of images, the immediate ability to e-mail letters with embedded images to friends and family and relatively fixed maintenance costs going forward. One can also be quite selective in which images to print, send them to a print lab with the latest printer technology via a website, and not worry about piling hundreds of prints (and free double prints) in their attic. By the way...

"They're here!!!"
