Personally, I would like to see the click! drive replace the 3.5" floppy disk drive as THE standard in the future....with the price of the 40 Mb disks eventually moving down to $2 to $3 each.
IMHO, if this were to happen, downloading and transporting nearly ANY file from the internet would be possible...even if one had to compress the disk(s) on occasion. At $2 to $3 in disk price, I think most wouldn't be too concerned about giving disks away.
With all the other possible uses of the click! drive (cameras, PDAs, photocopiers, scanners, GPSs, etc.) such a standard could easily be as well known and universal as current 3.5" floppy disks well beyond the year 2,000.
IMHO, the current 3.5" floppy disk (developed circa 1984) with 1.44 Mb capacity has simply worn out it's welcome (it's just not big enough any more) but I believe that a new 40 Mb STANDARD would be just right, knowing, again, they could be compressed occasionally when necessary.

p.s. Oh, by the way...since current 1.44 Mb floppy disks are just not big enough anymore, why would I want to buy a dual-function high capacity drive that clings to the past and is still compatible with them? As far as I'm concerned, that useless function only adds unnecessary complexity/cost to such drives and the 1.44 Mb feature just becomes something else that can fail. |
