Malcolm,
Sorry. In the 1600's the tulip, which was unknown in Holland at the time, was imported from Turkey. Everyone one starting collecting tulip bulbs and a craze started. Pretty soon there were more tulip bulb buyers than tulips. The prices skyrocketed, different color bulbs demanded higher prices because of their scarcity. There were rumors of a black tulip which had never been seen. Suddenly the thrifty Dutch were putting their entire fortunes on the line for black tullips, the equivalant today of close to a million dollars... a couple of years later the craze died out and many Hollanders were stuck and broke with tulips ( which they couldn't even eat )
In this country in the twenties people were buying real estate in Florida by the gallon, as it turned out and not by the acre...Kind of like buying a mule for stud.
There is a whole book of these stories...will get the title later unless one of your posters comes up with it...didn't mean to be so obscure.......nysebob2
