The Box Music Network And ACTV To Explore Enhanced Programming

More Pioneering Efforts for 'Viewer-Controlled' Music Programming
MIAMI BEACH, Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- TCI Music's The Box Music Network (Nasdaq: TUNE TUNEP) and ACTV (Nasdaq: IATV) today announced that the two companies will collaborate on an enhanced version of viewer-controlled music programming.
Using ACTV's proprietary programming technology, The Box Music Network will test consumers' responses to interactive concert programming. The ACTV system allows viewers to switch seamlessly between multiple feeds of video, audio and data in real time.
"It's all about added value," said Sharon H. Brown, Executive Vice President of Programming and Marketing for TCI Music. "We can give viewers the best four seats in the house, if that's what they want."
While sporting events have a successful track record in the event PPV business, live concerts and musical events have not delivered consistent or predictable results. The Box Music Network and ACTV will research whether giving the viewer control over the experience might drive viewer satisfaction and take rates.
"We're talking about a demographic that grew up with video games, with CD-Roms," said Brown. "These are kids who expect to control their entertainment environment. With ACTV's Plus system, they can focus on a particular band member, get artist bios, read song lyrics -- they can create their own personalized music video experience." ...
ACTV and The Box Music Network will preview an enhanced version of a concert performance at the Western Cable Show in Anaheim Dec. 1-4 (ACTV Booth 3262, Hall C). The concert will feature acclaimed blues and rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Shepherd has released a pair of best-selling records on Revolution/Warner Bros. Records. Two songs will be optimized for the demonstration, "Somewhere, Somehow, Someway" and "Everything is Broken." Viewing options will include the main concert program, "Kenny Cam" (a constant "iso" shot of Shepherd), "Mr. Crane" (a constant "iso" shot from a crane camera), and a biography and artist information stream.
