True, shareholders of closed banks ended up with zero in many cases, and the industry was downsized considerably. So much to the good. But the RTC spent over $10^11 ensuring the solvency of the assets purchased by the buying institution, did it not? Furthermore, no depositors lost money, as they would in an unfettered free market (I gather that was the main reason the government set up the RTC).

I am curious why you think "The most likely scenario is the yen will drop and start the chain reaction by putting too much pressure on the yuan." Not a happy prospect.
