TELLABS DEMONSTRATES IP TELEPHONY AND DATA OVER HFC AT WESTERN
CABLE SHOW '98

Visit Tellabs at Booth #4959 in Hall D in the Anaheim Convention Center

Lisle, Ill. — Tellabs will demonstrate IP telephony and data capabilities over its CABLESPAN®
2300 Universal Telephony Distribution System at the 1998 Western Cable Show in Anaheim, Calif.,
December 2-4. In addition, Tellabs will introduce a new family of remote service units, including an
outdoor unit designed to deliver from 4 to 12 lines of voice and/or data service to homes or small
businesses.

"To date, Tellabs has delivered more than 30,000 lines of cable telephone service to customers
worldwide," said Brian J. Jackman, president of Global Systems and Technology for Tellabs. "In
response to the ever-increasing needs of our customers, we have expanded key features of the
CABLESPAN platform for 1999."

Tellabs will demonstrate the versatility of the EXPRESS/pathTM integrated data solution, the first
product in the CABLESPAN platform to provide high-speed data to the home and a path over which
IP telephony calls can be placed. Future CABLESPAN products from Tellabs will offer such
applications as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and will be available in conjunction with the
development and issuance of the PacketCableTM standards in the next few years. As a participating
member of the PacketCable forum, Tellabs is working with other vendors to develop IP over HFC
standards for interoperable future products and applications, including VoIP.

Tellabs is also introducing a new family of remote service units (RSUs) for deployment at the
residence or office. These units facilitate cable telephony, and for the first time, integrated high-speed
data. This family includes:

A new multi-line RSU/M outdoor unit with integrated EXPRESS/path data, and featuring
optional 4, 8 or 12 line deployment configurations.

An upgraded 2-line RSU outdoor unit with integrated EXPRESS/path data.

An upgraded 2-line RiSU indoor unit with integrated EXPRESS/path data and a new, smaller
size - especially for international deployments.

More CABLESPAN innovations to be introduced at Western Show '98 include expanded RF
frequency ranges, flexible bandwidth allocation for voice and data, a greater deployable service
density in the same-sized footprint at the headend, and robust support of the entire platform from a
single, graphical-interface element management system, the CABLESPAN EMS. These features,
plus the new family of remotes and the EXPRESS/path data feature, are bundled together as the
CABLESPAN feature package 3.0 (FP 3.0) platform. These innovative upgrades for HFC telephony
networks will be available in early 1999.

In addition, Tellabs will show feature package 6.0 (FP 6.0), the latest software release for its
TITAN® 5500S digital cross-connect system. FP 6.0 allows the TITAN 5500 system to grow to
2,048 STS-1 equivalents. Moreover, FP 6.0 offers full, non-blocking time-slot interchange across the
entire 2,048 matrix - enabling efficient usage of all port interfaces versus tandem-tied systems.
Continuing its proven leadership in high-capacity transport systems, Tellabs offers this functionality in
new systems or as an expansion of existing 1,024-port systems.
