The internet is quickly evolving into the FIRST PLACE to shop for:

Legal and Medical Advice
Realestate
Education
Investment Information
& Investing
Books & Gifts
Automobiles New & Used
Specialty Appliances
Health Care Products
Beauty Supplies
Groceries
Delivered Meals
etc., etc.

Much of this will use automated processing via accounting and information databases. This can and will eliminate perhaps millions of retail sales people over the next ten years and hundreds of millions square feet of retail sales space.

The current primary driver is cost savings. This spells deflation! Your mention of Walmart is relevent as they pioneered the last major cost saving method which was "just in time" inventory. In the internet marketplace, manufacturers will ship direct to consumers. Or the fairly new industry of multi-vendor warehouse shippers will grow to accommodate the growing need.

Cheers, Jon
