You mentioned that eBay had stopped posting the exact number of auctions, and wondered why, whether it was to make it harder for us to keep a true auction count.

One reason may be signaled in their S-1 filing, where they mention that the number of listings tends to fall during Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. This is the first Thanksgiving/Christmas season that they have been public, so perhaps this is the time they want to hide the seasonal decline, especially with most investors betting on eBay being a Christmas shopping site. When people who bought on Christmas-shopping news see that its listings actually go down during the holidays, they may be inclined to change their minds and sell their stock.
