Jim S:

Re: "In my locale, the CO is about 30 miles away, and there are numerous "remote sites" scattered around. The closest remote to me is in my next door neighbor's yard, 2 miles away. So, my question is, if the loop length is about 3 miles, will ADSL work for me?"

Wow! And I thought I was far out at 40,000 ft. But then again, I live smack in the middle of LA.

If you're 30 miles out, I don't think you'll get ADSL for awhile, unless you got some new development in your area that might net the ILEC a nice new revenue stream that it would invest in some expensive infrastructure in your area.

Whadda mean by "remote site?" You just talkin' about a box? Are you talkin' about where the pair running to your house is spliced to the local phone cable? If so, the "remote site" that's just about useless as far as ADSL connectivity is concerned.

Right now, my understanding is that ADSL, with G.lite, is good to about 24,000 ft. I got 22 gauge wire in my streets, so maybe the range is a bit longer, but still not enough to deliver ADSL to my door step. My particular problem is that I'm situated at the end of the loop, where PacBell's jurisdiction borders with GTE. So the only way my neighborhood is gonna get ADSL anytime soon is to demonstrate to the telco that it would pay to invest in some "remote" equipment that would extend the range of ADSL connectivity beyond 24,000 ft from the CO.

My understanding is that what is needed to extend ADSL connectivity beyond its present range is installation of the right type of DLC capable of extending the ADSL signal before the quality of the signal diminishes to an unacceptable level. Whether this would require the installation of a fiber-optic line to the DLC, or whether the goal could be accomplished via copper I don't know.

I view the obstacles facing my situation would also apply to your situation. But I think the economics of the investment appear much more "remote" in your case. I live in a relatively high-income and populated area that would otherwise go w/o ADSL but for a financial incentive demonstrated to the telcos.

Anyway guys, good thread. Some good discussion, & especially, some good links. Who knows? I just might find the technogical solution I'm looking for by spending some time here.

As far as investing in this area, I personally think it is a crapshoot. Any investment must deal with micro-economic as well as macro-economic risk. I'd go with a major player who has the greatest capability to make its proprietary standards the industry standard.

Good luck to all . . . & may the luckiest investor win.
