It stands for Commodity ? Channel Index or some such thing. It basically tells you if the stock has probably topped or bottomed. The usual period for computing it is 18 days. If the stock in question changes direction more quickly than most (ie. like a "high-tech"), then that is a good period to use. It usually will keep you out of stocks that are in a long term down trend.
