To integrate or not to integrate?

The big question. Should sound, graphics etc be on the motherboard?

I think both yes and no. It makes sense for a cheap PC to put sound and graphics on the motherboard. You can get a PCChips Super7 with a 4 meg AGP and SB16 compat sound onboard for about $90, which makes for a really cheap system unit. It has its place.

On the other hand, IMO the time has not yet arrived where all you need is available as cheap commodity items. SB Live and Voodoo3 are still head and shulders better than what you can get integrated. In the end we all spend a little extra cash for those add-on items.

So Creaf still have a business, and IMO they will continue to do so while the technology frontiers are pushing forwards. Why worry about Intel bundling some graphics onto a new chip if, by the time they get it out the door, it will be two generations behind the times.

Question - does Creaf actually do better when cheap PCs have integrated sound and graphics? Creaf are more dominant in the retail marketplace than in the OEM. It seems to me that as more and more people have decently performing PCs, apart from having outdated sound/graphics, then the natural upgrade path for them is to buy add-in cards rather than a new processor. Perhaps Creaf's potential market is actually larger as a result.
