David, Christ here was responding to another challenge of the trouble-makers. The subject here was not His return but His identity.
Christ proved to them in His works and in His miracles ...over, and over, and over, again, and they still refused to believe. Here He tell them ...So you still want a sign, what an evil and adulterous generation.! Well you'll get your sign, But you still won't believe it and that is to your own condemnation!
Then He makes the ref. to Jonas.
40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Remember David, this was a literal 3 days, and that is what Christ was making reference to. Christ then goes on to tell them that even Nineveh repented after Jonas began preaching. The sign of Jonas being flung from the whales belly was good enough for them!...But now, even even though Christ is so much greater than Jonas, and had done more powerful a work than Jonas has done...these guys still refuse to accept the truth...and still look for signs, what a bunch of evil jokesters!
Did not Christ give that sign, and in fact God did raise Him in 3 days? It already happened...In 3 days Just as He said! ..Literally...!
He also, during another confrontation,when they were again challenging His deity, He told them the same thing,and again that blind and evil generation did not get it! .
John 2:18-22
18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up......(And He did, in 3 days!)
20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
21 But he spake of the temple of his body.
22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
And this of course was again the same literal 3 days.
