Corrected: Compare to traditional notebook computers

In 1997, 13.7 million notebook computers were shipped; in 1998, that figure is expected to rise to 14 million to 15 million units, depending on the strength of sales in the second half of the year, according to market-research firm Huret Associates Inc., Yardley, Pa.

While lithium-ion batteries will account for only about 300,000 units this year, the technology is being integrated with increasing frequency, particularly in high-end notebook applications.

Looks like VLNC overestimated their own infallibility and overinvested once again:

1 million batteries (laptop per FMK) a month -- not only will they have to steal every bit of business from Sanyo, Sony, Toshiba to get the current 300,000 per year but every single manufacturer will have to swhitch from LI-ion and NMH to Valence's LI-ion polymer. Gosh did they forget the other players are going to have capacity too? I assume that N.I. will also have a capacity problem.
