I have an old 486DX/66 desktop that I would like to upgrade CHEAPLY to as fast as possible. I intend to make it a capable web browser that is as fast as possible CHEAPLY... Can you or anyone give me any suggestions??? 1. A 486DX/66 is a capable web browser. 2. Your upgrade options are limited. You could upgrade your CPU. Tiger Direct advertises one assembled by PNY for $89.99. Tiger Direct's part number is P56-2200. Description is PNY QuickChip 133. This will double the speed of your CPU. This item is shown on Tiger Direct's web site. Go to tigerdirect.com and then do a search on CPU upgrade to view the listing for the product. Others have reported bad experiences when buying from Tiger Direct. I have hadn't any problems. However, you may want to try a different source for a PNY QuickChip 133 than Tiger Direct. The next best way to improve performance is to add more memory to your computer. As a minimum your computer should have at least 32 megabytes to run Windows 98 and preferably 64 megabytes.
