So, lml, do you think that xDSL is going anywhere? I assumed (with all that implies) that people like me who live in rural areas would have problems with getting any variety of DSL because of the expense per person to implement. But, if someone in the middle of LA is going to have trouble getting DSL service, that tends to dampen my enthusiasm a bit. But, I still don't understand exactly what needs to be done to implement G Lite. I know that I need a DSL modem, and the PhoCo needs to put in a magic box to receive what my modem tells it and convert it to packets, but I have no idea what the costs for such things would be. Or, why the PhoCo's magic box must necessarily be located in the CO. That's why I'm following this thread. I really don't know what's in the PhoCo's remote. It's a box the size of a Superman phone booth, full of backup batteries and PC cards. I assume it is an amplifier and modulation station. Is wire guage a major factor in loop length? If so, which is better for longer distance, fat wire or skinny wire?
