Jason, the handsets have pretty powerful computers. They may not be much more than a computer, all on a a single chip. There are very powerful economies of scale for such chips. I doubt that the chips are being produced on a truely large-scale yet. Partly because the market must be proven, but largely because the design might be tweaked once experience is gained in operating the system.

With the base-stations I suspect in the early days components were bought with little regard for cost, the main question being "will it do the job?" Just about now they might be going back to suppliers and saying: "That component does nicely, thankyou. Now, if you could produce it for $x instead of $nx, we could give you a big order."
