Hey lml,

I'm by no means an mp3 expert, but I have been doing my homework during the last month or so. I still have yet to "rip" and post. Below are a few links you might find helpful.

From what I've read the MusicMatch software utilizes a compression algorithm from Xing Technologies. It appears that while Xing is one of the "faster" algorithms it correspondingly is one of the lowest in terms of quality. Hence MusicMatch's ability to "rip" and compress (mp3) in "one" step. Those in the know appear to look down on this and the general philosophy is the slower the compression the higher the quality and its a two step process, ripping and compressing.

But I like MusicMatch's database software and find their player to have a "fuller" sound than WinAmp which I found to be quite hollow. Though one can play around with WinAmp's equalizer I find it drives me nuts as the response time between actually moving the slider and what you here is a couple of seconds. Granted, I'm using a P166.

I suppose DIMD chose MusicMatch for its simplicity (not to mention the fact that along with Xing we're talking "real" companies as supposed to a guy in Germany doing business thru email and snailmail). Here are the links:

If you use any of the software mentioned let me know your impressions.
