Accounting for Spin-offs (slightly OT)

How does one do accounting for spinoffs and the "parent"
stocks ? For example, if one buys 100 QCOM at $40 (before
spinoff) and sells them at $50 (after spinoff) and sells
another 25 spawned LWIN for $6, what "cost" basis does one
use for QCOM and LWIN ?

I know...I should be reading some IRS publication ABC but
I thought there may be people on this board who may have
some of the answers. :-)
