Cyrix was penny wise but pound foolish by not licensing the MMX instructions from Intel. They saved the license fees, but lost a lot of time reverse engineering the codes. 6x86 MMX chips were very late to the market and no longer competitive as a result.

Where did you get this information? I doesn't sound very accurate to me.
