The Qualcomm spinoff of Leap was a taxable dividend. The value of the dividend, and therefore your cost basis, was determined by the selling price on the first day of trading; I have yet to see an official figure, but believe it was somewhere in between $6 and $6.25 per share. Your cost basis for Qualcomm did not change. However, in non-taxable spinoffs, I don't know how the cost basis is figured.
