U.S. Nuclear-Arms Agency, States Lag on Y2K Fix, Newspapers Say

Washington, Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Defense Special Weapons Agency, responsible for maintaining the safety and security of nuclear stockpiles, has admitted falsifying readiness reports on fixing the year 2000 computer date-recording problem, USA Today said. The Pentagon agency never conducted required tests on three of five computer systems that are ''mission critical'' and also did not develop contingency plans in case of a failure in any such system, USA Today said, citing a report from the Defense Department inspector general. Meantime, U.S. states also are behind schedule fixing the date problem, which could delay payments or interrupt service to people receiving welfare, Medicaid, food stamps or other types of assistance, the New York Times said, citing federal and state officials.

In September, the Federal Reserve announced it will boost next year the amount of U.S. currency it holds in inventory in case U.S. residents seek extra cash because of fears automated teller machines or other payment systems will fail as the year 2000 begins.
