The December issue of Computer Shopper has an interesting note concerning the new SGI Win NT machines. (Page 405, under "Random Bits 'N' Pieces"). I have not seen this mentioned elsewhere. Apparently SGI didn't like the Intel BX Chipset so they designed their own, according to the article. They said SGI was not happy with the BX chipset because it would not let them run things as fast as they wanted. SGI does seem to be innovating to differentiate their machine from average (i.e. Dell) boxes. Of course, SGI is a research company and Dell is just a marketing, support, and assembly company. Okay, so what is a chipset ? The chipset in computers are the chips that allow the cpu, memory, isa bus, pci bus, etc... to all work together. Best layman's explanation I can give. The Intel BX chipset was the first to offer a 100 MHZ memory bus. The BX chipset is used by all most all P II motherboard makers. Kirk Vanden
