Merrill analyst sees big US stocks retreat-report

LONDON, Jan 15 (Reuter) - A Merrill Lynch adviser believes the high-flying U.S. stock market is due for a 25 to 30 percent correction later this year, Britain's Independent newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The newspaper said Robert Farrell, a veteran investment adviser at Merrill, gave his views in an address to British fund managers.

Farrell said the pattern of small capitalisation stocks topping out in the first half followed by large companies performing well in the second half reflected a maturing cycle, the newspaper said.

The Independent quoted Farrell as saying top shares may be nearing "at least an interim peak," and that the market's final peak would be reached later in the year after earnings disappointments and the prospect of higher interest rates damaged sentiment.>>
