Spare me the long term damage lecture. Do you agree with an opponent of mine here that George Bush told the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help him God, when deposed by Lawrence Walsh? Do you think Bill Gates told the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth when deposed by the Justice department? Do you think anybody is contemplating perjury prosecution against Bill Gates?
Yes, this affair is about partisan politics. But it cuts both ways. Do you think when Jesse Helms and former Senator Lauch Faircloth went to see David Sentelle, they talked about the weather? And the subsequent replacement of Robert Fiske by Starr was totally devoid of political motivation?
I've gotten plenty of amusement from Bill Gates' deposition, but Gates knew it would likely be viewed in public. And I don't have to be told that people are counseled to give as little information as possible in such situations. But somehow, when it's the President, he looses the right to self defense. Anything less that abject fealty to the Grand Inquisitor is obstruction of justice. And somehow, all that secret Grand Jury testimony is dumped on the public, when it suits partisan purposes. But to see anything partisan on that side of the issue is just too weird. Makes you a "partisan hater" and a White House agent.
Newt at least had the good grace to accept responsibility when the garbage dump blew up in his face. Here, we'll just keep getting the same lecture about how Clinton is at the root of the decline of the west, and the voters who showed some distaste for the spectacle were all idiots. That's life.
