you're getting your money's worth of advice on this question. Here's some more of that hi-value stuff:

I enjoy (love) screwing around with my computer--playing with it carelessly, sometimes having to fix it. I used to be an auto-mechanic and have a deep need to take things apart. I also have the luxury of the time to do this. I'm no expert or professional, but I've read some books and am able to do some of the more basic technical things like formatting and partitioning hard-drives, file backup, and doing a clean Windows install. So, I can basically escape any jam I put myself into. What I'm saying is, if you don't have the time and desire to delve a little into your computer, then yes, you are probably better off calling in the consultant or taking it to the shop--or finding a friend who is unable to keep his hands off the friggin' things, there's plenty of us out there...
