Jim,
Sorry I didn't respond sooner to your post. I thought your questions were rhetorical.
So, you think what you've just described is the way it's always been? If not, have you given any serious thought to what events, decisions or conditions contributed to the present day situation?
Jim, I've given a lot of thought to what decisions contributed to the present-day situation. I believe the causes include-- 1) The proliferation of firearms in the cities. 2) The depletion of the urban property tax base caused by middle-class flight to the suburbs. 3) The glorification of illegal drugs by the counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s. 4) The destruction of the trolley-car systems by the automobile manufaturers. 5) The continued expansion of the interstate highway system in lieu of a sane, intermodal railway infrastructure.
Well, friend, you apparently think that seeing and hearing the President of these United States go unpunished for lying under oath... repeatedly, has absolutely NO effect on the fabric of this society.
To me all U.S. presidents have been scoundrels, war criminals and liars. As for Clinton's getting caught lying under oath, he should be punished. I like the idea of prosecuting him after his term is up. I believe he won't be convicted, however, because D.C. juries are very liberal and very pro-Clinton.
I and many others believe impeachment would be more traumatic to the country than it's worth.
Do you think that many of the other 260 million of us will take note of the precedent being set by this president and his hired lapdogs and apologists? Do you think this "new set of rules" will help "cure" the conditions in your neighborhood or, will they just be another nail in the coffin of this society?
Since before antiquity, people with power have gotten away with murder and lying and stealing. It's only the rabble, the powerless plebes, who've ever consistently had to suffer the consequences of their misdeeds. People understand this. They have always understood this. They see Clinton, or some other a**hole, getting away with a crime and they comprehend that if they did the same thing they would be locked up because they don't have the power and connections that he has. I dont't think a powerful person getting away with a crime will have any negative or positive impact on our frayed, blood-streaked social fabric.
That's just the way of the world our elders handed us.
I gotta run. Literally. Beautiful day out in Chicago. Sunny and unseasonably warm. Good day for a jog. Just gotta dodge them bullets! :-) |
