You should see if some of these stocks also have warrants. It is usually more profitable to trade the warrants. IFLYW and BFLYW are examples.

I also think it is much safter to buy PUTs than to short if possible (unfortunately, it seems only the big names have options).

The way to play UBID is to go long with the momentum and short MALL when it stalls. This is also a way to hedge your position if you want to hold. You can also do this with IFLY/IFLYW and BFLY/BFLYW.
